Poor Boy believed in his hero worship,
And he watched all those TV shows
Where the Good Guy killed the Bad Guy
…to win The Girl!
It sounded so easy,
He was ready to go,
To fight a war he never knew existed;
A People he didn’t know.
All the blood-n-guts
And the shoot-em-up
Was a way to prove
That he was a Brave Man,
Or … no.
The saddest part about the war
He didn’t understand:
His job
Was to take the life of Another Man.
One day he met Another Man
On the bend of a mountain trail.
He didn’t dislike him,
Didn’t know his name,
And both men were scared as hell.
One felt the fear and realized
When he saw it in the Other’s eyes,
There was a better place to be;
There was a better life to lead.
One Man died--
And One Family cried…
The War and the Patrol moved on.
They both had served their side with pride
(Each Man, respectively)
One Man lived to tell his story
With a sad, sad tear in his eye.
Poor Boy was just a Pawn in the game,
Putting on a show.
Poor Boy counted his days in country,
As the Giants counted their gold.
Being used, and being abused
By corrupt politician at home
Who walked over Everyone,
Oh-h, … no
Now he hides his fears
In the darkness of memory,
Sharing the guilt of war.
Don’t listen, Brother,
To the songs
Of war,
Just let Another Man be,
Just let Another Man be...
